The Maine Forest Service’s Bureau of Forest Health and Monitoring is seeking applications for a field-based position in Downeast Maine. The successful candidate will measure National Forest Inventory plots. Maine is the only state in New England where state crews complete this federal plot work. Work is performed in the field under a variety of conditions, including:
-
Long or short walks from a vehicle carrying up to 35 pounds over varied terrain, from mountains, to swamps, to suburban and urban conditions,
-
Bug-free and extremely buggy days,
-
Awful and beautiful weather,
-
Stunning and unremarkable scenery.
Work may sometimes be performed alone in remote locations. Overnight travel for a week at a time will be required and may be in any area of the state, including commercial lodging and a remote camp in the North Maine Woods. Overtime is generally available during the growing season and may sometimes be required to meet project deadlines.
This job requires strong tree identification skills, attention to detail, an ability to navigate in the woods and on roads and work independently and with a team. On-the-job training will occur for required measurements and assessments. The position is based in eastern Maine, generally described by Danforth to the north, Lee to the west and Calais to the south. Candidates must possess or be able to obtain a valid Maine Driver's License. They must be on track to pass US Forest Service-administered written and practical certification tests in plot measurements before exiting probationary status.
Applications will be accepted through July 10.
