In his second term as a member of Congress representing Long Beach, California, Garcia is now the leading Democrat on a committee that provides oversight to a wide range of government agencies across all three branches of government, as well as a subpoena power in consultation with the Republican chair of the committee. Democrat Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City. An assemblyman representing parts of Queens, he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and nearly a dozen other candidates in an election that utilizes ranked-choice voting. He will now face Republican Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an Independent, among other third-party candidates. Republican Matt Woods is the newest member of the Alabama State Senate, representing district 5. Woods, a now-former state representative, was elected on Tuesday to replace former senate president pro tempore, Greg Reed. The 5th district in Alabama covers portions of the northern part of the state, including Fayette, Lamar, and Walker counties.
