Team – we have urgent news to share:
Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Medicaid patients can no longer choose their own healthcare providers, conflicting with federal law that states any individual eligible for medical assistance through Medicaid has the right to select their own doctor.
As Vox News states, Medina v. Planned Parenthood could be the most consequential health care decision in recent years, and “among the one of the deadliest, as it raises a cloud of doubt over countless laws requiring that certain people receive health coverage, as well as laws ensuring that they will receive a certain quality of care.”

This ruling comes just a few days following the anniversary of when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the historic Roe v. Wade decision. Now they are once again attacking reproductive rights – and causing a slew of other healthcare access issues in the process.
Here’s the deal: The Republican Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, ordered state officials to deny Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood, stating, “Payment of taxpayer funds to abortion clinics, for any purpose, results in the subsidy of abortion and the denial of the right to life.” But the patient involved in the case was not even seeking an abortion – they sought access to birth control.
Now, thanks to this ruling, a Medicaid patient can no longer sue over being denied access to a specific provider. As the New York Times points out, the Republicans on the Supreme Court have now “made it easier for states to deny funding to Planned Parenthood, particularly given the current administration’s hostility to abortion rights.”
This is going to have an enormous impact. This ruling could result in access to essential health services being severely limited, especially for low-income and minority communities who depend on Planned Parenthood for their care. This could also lead to Planned Parenthood having to close hundreds of clinics if more states take advantage of this ruling – and due to Republicans in Congress working to eliminate Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood entirely.
This is what happens when extremists are in control of our government. Anti-choice advocates would rather hamper our ability to access any healthcare than allow people to choose what they do with their own bodies. It’s disgusting. Help us fight to protect access to abortion and contraception in Virginia by donating $20 now.
