This week in tobacco policy news
Rhode Island: The legislature passed a bill which will limit smoking to one "smoking lounge" in each casino. The bill heads to the governor's desk and if signed, will go into effect on January 1, 2027.

Illinois: Gov. Pritzker signed into law the state budget, which includes amending the definition of "tobacco products" to include nicotine pouches, lozenges, and gum. The tax rate on the wholesale price of tobacco products also increased from 36% to 45%. This goes into effect on July 1, 2025.

Maine: Gov. Mills signed into law the state budget, which includes a provision to raise the cigarette tax by $1.50 to $3.50 per pack.
