LGBT+ youth and young adults in states with protective policies had more than 50% lower odds of smoking and vaping

Legislation that may harm the LGBT+ community – by limiting rights or reducing access to important services – is currently on the rise, and this may have a long-term impact on the physical and mental health of LGBT+ individuals. According to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, LGBT+ individuals living in states with policies that protect LGBT+ rights had 65% lower odds of current cigarette use and 56% lower odds of current e-cigarette use compared with LGBT+ individuals in states with more restrictive or discriminatory policies.

Across all 50 states, the same 5 disparities in cigarette smoking persist

Across the country, data show a consistent pattern of disparities in cigarette smoking, highlighting the relationship between tobacco use and various socioeconomic and health factors. While smoking prevalence can vary widely in different parts of the country – 12 Midwestern and Southern states have 50% higher smoking prevalence – the same demographic factors influence disparities regardless of location. These five socioeconomic and health factors must be addressed to help all Americans enjoy healthy lives free from nicotine addiction.

Rhode Island: The legislature passed a bill which will limit smoking to one "smoking lounge" in each casino. The bill heads to the governor's desk and if signed, will go into effect on January 1, 2027.

Illinois: Gov. Pritzker signed into law the state budget, which includes amending the definition of "tobacco products" to include nicotine pouches, lozenges, and gum. The tax rate on the wholesale price of tobacco products also increased from 36% to 45%. This goes into effect on July 1, 2025.
