Here’s what the Supreme Court’s decision actually means…
BREAKING news, John:
The U.S. Supreme Court just issued a 6-3 decision in the birthright citizenship case, issuing a ruling that dramatically limits the ability of lower courts to protect people from Trump’s dangerous and extreme actions.
What does this actually mean? Let’s break it down:
-
The conservative supermajority on the Court is limiting the power of federal judges to issue universal, temporary bans on Trump administration policies, like the effort to repeal birthright citizenship.
-
The court is NOT currently ruling on the merits of Trump’s attempt to end automatic citizenship for those born on U.S. soil, kicking the can on this critical threat to one of our most fundamental Constitutional rights.
Overall, this is a victory for the Trump administration. Once again, far-right justices are letting Trump get away with his abuse of executive power while weakening the judiciary. In her dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson warned that this is ”an existential threat to the rule of law.”
While the Court is stopping Trump’s executive order to repeal birthright citizenship from taking effect for 30 days, it’s unclear what comes after that. But we can be sure that this will cause confusion and fear for many across our country.
We need to be prepared for whatever happens next, John. Will you rush $5 or more before our end-of-quarter deadline on Monday at midnight so we can be ready for the fights ahead?
