Supreme Court curbs injunctions that blocked Trump's birthright citizenship plan
In a sadly predictable 6-3 decision, the Republican judges on the Supreme Court decided that Trump should be allowed to take steps to implement its proposal to end automatic birthright citizenship. The court granted a request by the Trump administration to narrow the scope of nationwide injunctions imposed by judges so that they apply only to states, groups and individuals that sued. That means the birthright citizenship proposal can likely move forward at least in part in the states that challenged it as well as those that did not. "When a court concludes that the executive branch has acted unlawfully, the answer is not for the court to exceed its power, too," wrote Justice Amy Coney Barrett in the majority opinion, which makes ZERO sense. Justice Brown called it "an existential threat to the rule of law," and Justice Sotomayer warned that "No right is safe in the new legal regime the court creates."
Trump’s big bad bill auctions off our pristine Arctic wilderness for corporate pillaging
Oceans Conservancy: You’ve been hearing for weeks about the giant reconciliation bill that Republicans are working to push through Congress. Well, we won’t beat around the bush: THIS IS THE WORST ENVIRONMENTAL BILL IN HISTORY. It FORCES the government to sell off millions of acres of our public Arctic land for oil and gas development, allowing big corporations to run roughshod over sacred Native lands, critical wildlife preserves, and pristine wilderness. They’re selling off our children’s birthright for pennies on the dollar so they can pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. We need all hands on deck ASAP to stop this dystopian nightmare from becoming reality. Click here to make your voice heard and tell the Senate to protect the Arctic and STOP the sale of our public lands!
Trump says US has signed a deal with China on trade
As usual, nobody in the Trump admin has given any details about this supposed deal, and it's unclear if this alleged agreement was different from the one Trump announced two weeks earlier that he said would make it easier for American industries to obtain much-needed needed magnets and rare earth minerals. “We’re going to have deal after deal after deal,” promised Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. “The president likes to close these deals himself. He’s the dealmaker." Yeah, nothing says "art of the deal" like doing huge amounts of damage to your own economy and pissing off all of your trading partners and throwing the entire global economy into chaos only to eventually return to where you were in the first place. The trade deficit that Trump was honking about so much? It's 11% BIGGER now. Masterful gambit, sir.
School choice, religious school tax carveouts run afoul of Senate’s Byrd rule
Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough's proverbial chainsaw hummed merrily on Friday morning, axing out even more of the ridiculous and destructive additions that the GOP tried to jam into their Gargantuan Dogshit Bill. This time, she cut out a multibillion-dollar private school tax credit program and efforts to cut religious schools out of a planned expansion of the federal college endowment tax. The steady stream of cuts prompted calls from the more openly lawless members of the House — people like Dan Crenshaw and Randy Fine — to just fire the parliamentarian and replace her with someone who will sign off on all their nonsense, which which Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott did in 2001...but Sen. Thune has already come out and said he won't, knowing that it's only a matter of time before the shoe will be on the other foot.
"It's a killing field" IDF soldiers ordered to shoot deliberately at unarmed Gazans waiting for humanitarian aid
Israeli soldiers in Gaza told Haaretz that the army has deliberately fired at Palestinians near aid distribution sites over the past month. Conversations with officers and soldiers reveal that commanders ordered troops to shoot at crowds to drive them away or disperse them, even though it was clear they posed no threat. One soldier described the situation as a total breakdown of the Israel Defense Forces' ethical codes in Gaza. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, 549 people have been killed near aid centers and in areas where residents were waiting for UN food trucks since May 27. Over 4,000 have been wounded, but the exact number of those killed or injured by IDF fire remains unclear. "It's a killing field," one soldier said. "Where I was stationed, between one and five people were killed every day. They're treated like a hostile force – no crowd-control measures, no tear gas – just live fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars. Then, once the center opens, the shooting stops, and they know they can approach. Our form of communication is gunfire."
Gavin Newsom sues Fox News for $787M in defamation case over Trump call
The California governor has decided that if Trump can bully news organizations into giving him huge payouts, why doesn't someone do that to Fox? The California governor accused Fox News of defamation in a lawsuit Friday morning, alleging the network should fork over $787 million after host Jesse Watters claimed Newsom lied about his phone calls with Trump, who ordered National Guard troops to Los Angeles this month. Newsom’s lawyers argue Watters’ program misleadingly edited a video of Trump to support the claim. "If Fox News wants to lie to the American people on Donald Trump's behalf, it should face consequences — just like it did in the Dominion case,” Newsom told POLITICO in a statement. “Until Fox is willing to be truthful, I will keep fighting against their propaganda machine." How do you like THEM apples, Jesse?
Bobby Cole is here to put an END to Greg Abbott’s cruel extremism
Bobby Cole for Governor: Bobby Cole is a retired firefighter, cattleman, and poultry producer who’s running to represent the real people of Texas — and put an END to the vicious cruelty, outrageous corruption, and bigoted extremism of Republican Governor Greg Abbott. It’s time for Texas had a governor who understands the price of milk, not just the price of oil, and nobody understands that better than Cole, who built his livelihood from the ground up. As governor, he’s going to fight for lower costs on essentials like housing, food, and healthcare, stronger public schools, and an economy that works for working people, not billionaire donors. Texas has suffered for far too long under Greg Abbott; will you chip in to help make Bobby Cole the next governor of Texas?
Pentagon halts critical hurricane data feed, raising alarm ahead of peak storm season
Every decision made by this administration and its idiot officials makes zero fucking sense and actively endangers people's lives. Why would you want to make it harder to track hurricanes? What is wrong with these people?
Texas man born to U.S. soldier on U.S. army base abroad deported
Another day, another nightmare for an innocent person. In this case, poor Jermaine Thomas is in the uniquely dystopian and terrifiying situation of being a person without citizenship ANYWHERE, as he was born on a US military base in Germany. Now he's been deported to Jamaica, a place he's never been, and where he also isn't a citizen. "Thomas says he doesn’t know what to do in Jamaica. He finds people difficult to understand, plus many speak Patois, and he doesn’t. He doesn’t know how to get a job. He doesn’t know if it’s the Jamaican or U.S. government paying for his hotel room, and for how long that will last. He’s not sure if it’s even legal for him to be there," reports the Austin Chronicle.
White House video embraces Trump as "daddy" after NATO chief's remark
In a truly bizarre spectacle, the White House released a video in which the Usher song "Daddy's Home" plays over footage of Trump, while Trump's website immediately started hawking Trump Daddy tee-shirts. NATO chief Mark Rutte made the unfortunate mistake of using the term "daddy" while discussing the conflict between Israel and Iran, which Trump immediately took to mean *him* and now all the psychosexual complexes of MAGA world have fresh meat to work with. Dr. Freud, you have your work cut out for you.
Supreme Court rules for South Carolina in its bid to defund Planned Parenthood
The GOP-controlled Supreme Court handed another huge win to the far-right by concluding that individual Medicaid patients cannot sue to enforce their right to pick a medical provider, which will help the state in its fight to stop Planned Parenthood from receiving funding through Medicaid. Abortion is all but illegal in South Carolina already, but that isn't stopping the misogynist crusaders in the legislature from trying to stop women from being able to access any and all reproductive health services from Planned Parenthood, which saves countless lives every year with pap smears, prenatal childcare, and cancer screenings. "The Supreme Court is telling women that their lives are disposable and their health doesn't matter. Shameful," wrote Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.
