I spent the last week teaching high school students in a summer writing program, something I have done since I was barely older than a teenager myself. Though working with young writers is extremely rewarding, it’s also intense. It’s important to pace yourself—something I have never been great at—and by the end of the first day, I was nursing a headache. I knew I had to rest to avoid a flare-up of the migraines that have followed me since a severe case of COVID several years ago. I got better, but better is a process.
This week at the Climate Justice desk, we are going down the long road to recovery. First, ongoing wildfire recovery in Maui illustrates the broader challenges communities face when disasters collide with climate change, colonization, and economic recovery. Next, while we realize that overconsumption is a contributing factor to the climate crisis, social media trends still promote it. Then, how messaging that aligns values across the ideological and political spectrum makes progress possible for equitable climate and health solutions. Finally, Pride Month concludes with a collection of stories NPQ has published to uplift LGBTQ+ voices and powerful contributions to history, society, and culture worldwide.
