General Newsletter From the Office of Senator Andy Kim

Happy Friday, New Jersey!

Take Action: Share Your Story

This week, the Republicans’ “Big, Disastrous Bill” is advancing in the Senate. This is the bill that would cut health care for 16 million Americans, close hospitals and nursing homes, stifle innovation, and allow kids to go hungry, all in service of tax cuts for the richest among us.

Here’s how you can help us make some noise: Post on social media about how you, your family, and/or your community will be impacted by these cuts and tag @SenatorAndyKim. We’ll be reading your stories and sharing some of your posts on our platforms.

Your voice matters. Ahead of this critical vote in the Senate, let’s uplift how this bill will impact New Jersey.

Fighting Hunger in New Jersey, Denouncing the Nomination of Emil Bove, & Centering Our State's Talent and Innovation

FIGHTING HUNGER IN NEW JERSEY:

Last weekend, Senator Kim toured the Norwescap food bank in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. He met with food pantry clients and SNAP recipients. In speaking with them, the Senator heard one thing time and time again: how the Republicans’ proposed cuts to SNAP would negatively impact their families and communities.

In the Senator’s own words:

“After talking to people, especially those that are going and seeking help, they’re telling me that they’re working. They’re working sometimes one, two, three jobs. They’ve got a lot of other challenges including health care issues. These are not people who are lazy, these are not people who are uninterested in working. We should be able to support and help our fellow Americans in their time of need. I think in the richest, most powerful country in the world, we can be able to find a way to make sure that there is a foundation for dignity and decency for all, especially when it comes to hunger.”

DENOUNCING THE NOMINATION OF EMIL BOVE:

Senator Kim denounced the nomination of Emil Bove for the 3rd Circuit Court of the United States, a New Jersey seat.

The only qualification that Emil Bove has is his loyalty to the President. Watch the Senator break down why we must all oppose this nomination.

CENTERING NEW JERSEY TALENT AND INNOVATION:

This week, Senator Kim met with Nariman Farvardin, President of Stevens Institute of Technology. They discussed concerns facing higher education, including the Trump Administration’s attack on foreign students in New Jersey, and innovation efforts at the university.

Foreign students make critical contributions to our society and help us compete on the world stage. We should welcome global talent with open arms, not threaten to revoke their visas.

We were also excited to hear about the work Stevens’ faculty and students are doing around AI and quantum. New Jersey can be a real leader of cutting-edge technologies and the people at Stevens are proving that.

Responding to U.S. Strikes on Iran, Highlighting the Impact of Medicaid Cuts on Hospitals and Nursing Homes, & Fighting for Reproductive Health Care

RESPONDING TO THE U.S. STRIKES ON IRAN:

The night of the U.S. strikes against Iran, Senator Kim released a Twitter/X thread.

The ongoing, tenuous situation in Iran and the Middle East leaves so much at stake.

Watch the Senator break down some hard questions we still need answers to.

Senator Kim also joined Senator Kaine’s War Powers Resolution to reassert Congress’ authority around further military action. The Senator stated:

“The Trump Administration has claimed that we were at war, but declaring war is not their decision to make. Congress has the power to decide when America goes to war, and we owe Americans who are sick and tired of being thrown into conflicts without their consent the full exercising of our Constitutional obligation. This amendment would leave no doubt that Senator Kaine’s resolution would ensure that President Trump has to make the case to the American people for further action against Iran without constraining our ability to help defend the Israeli people from Iranian attacks.”

HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPACT OF MEDICAID CUTS ON HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES:

This week, Senator Kim highlighted 3 ways that the Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid would impact hospitals and nursing homes across the country.

Watch him break it down here or read on for more information.

How cuts to Medicaid will impact hospitals and nursing homes:

  1. $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid impacts not just the people on Medicaid, but hospital systems around the country. Cuts to Medicaid this severe will close hospitals, making it harder for all of us to get the care we need.
  2. With these cuts to Medicaid, we could see a decimation of rural hospitals which would experience $50 billion in cuts over the next ten years.
  3. Nursing homes are going to take a huge hit. 60% of extended nursing home stays are paid for by Medicaid. These cuts will directly impact our ability to care for our loved ones, including our parents and grandparents.

FIGHTING FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE:

On Tuesday, we recognized the 3rd anniversary of the Dobbs decision which overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the constitutional right to abortion.

Today, our reproductive freedom remains at risk around the country and many states, including New Jersey, are facing further federal cuts to reproductive health care in the Republicans’ reconciliation bill that’s making its way through the Senate right now.

That’s why Senator Kim is taking action to restore abortion access nationwide by supporting the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2025. Every person in America should have the freedom to decide when, if, and how to start a family.
