Big companies can do a lot to fix that. But when it comes to plastic waste, Whole Foods isn’t measuring up.

In a 2021 report, the grocery store earned an "F" score on plastic waste reduction, putting it behind Taco Bell, Walmart and Amazon.[1]

We know that Whole Foods can do better and live up to its eco-friendly image. That's why we're calling on Whole Foods to cut down on single-use plastics.

When I go shopping, I'm looking for groceries. But too much of what I'm bringing home is plastic.

Whole Foods is no exception. Despite its commitment to sustainability, more than half of the company's signature "365" brand products come in single-use plastic.[] [1]

That's why we're calling on Whole Foods to live up to its reputation and do more to reduce plastic waste.

Whole Foods was one of the first retailers to announce major plastic reduction goals, way back in the early 2000s. But it hasn't come close to living up to its worthy goals.

In fact, many products, like milk, spaghetti and yogurt, are almost impossible to buy from Whole Foods without buying some kind of single-use plastic.[2]

Single-use plastic is an enormous global problem, contributing to pollution that will persist for centuries. Customers should be able to shop without contributing to the problem. We want reusable and non-plastic alternatives.

Whole Foods has plenty of ways to reduce single-use plastic at its stores. It could allow customers to bring their own cups and bags to the store. Or it could make more use of paper and cardboard. It could even sell more fruits and vegetables without added plastic packaging.

People need sustainable choices. We want the option to shop without harming the planet, or endangering our kids' future. Whole Foods has a chance to give us that opportunity, and to live up to its eco-friendly reputation.
