Hey John,
Earlier this month, the New York Times broke the news that President Trump is actively pressuring lawmakers in Texas to redraw their congressional maps mid-decade.
This is alarming for many reasons:
🗳️Texas’ current congressional map is already gerrymandered and is already being sued for violating the Voting Rights Act — a mid-decade redraw that makes the gerrymandering even more extreme could further dilute the voting power of marginalized communities.
💰Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called the state legislature into a special session to make changes to the map, which will cost taxpayers unnecessary money. He has not added redistricting to the docket, but he still has time to do so. A 30-day special session in Texas has the price tag of anywhere from $1-$3 million, all coming from taxpayers’ wallets.
📉Redrawing a map mid-decade to tilt election results in favor of one political party sets a dangerous precedent, one that bypasses the traditional redistricting process tied to new census data.
We’re calling it what it is: Trump is attempting to manipulate a congressional map by pressuring state lawmakers to engage in a “ruthless gerrymander” for partisan gain is a direct blow to American democracy.

Here’s the thing, John: Redistricting is no longer on a once-per-decade redrawing cadence. Because partisan extremists are determined to seek unfair advantages, they are willing to manipulate maps whenever and wherever it benefits them — even if that’s outside of the typical redistricting cycle that comes with the census.
Just a few states away in Ohio, state lawmakers are preparing for a mid-decade redraw of their congressional map because of previous partisan attempts to gerrymander and skew results to lock in a certain majority. It’s no surprise, given the notorious history of extremist Ohioan lawmakers of manipulating maps.
And get this: The Ohio Supreme Court has struck down gerrymandered maps there a whopping SEVEN times — five times for the legislative maps, and twice for the congressional maps.
While Ohio is already in the spotlight, Texas is now under pressure from the President of the United States.
Across the country, ideological extremists are engaging in a coordinated effort to manipulate maps for partisan gain — all while diluting the power of the people, bending the rules, and weakening the foundation of our democracy.
From organizing communities in states like Texas and Ohio to educating voters across the country about the efforts of anti-democracy forces, we’re advocating to ensure that every person has fair representation. We can’t do it without you.

Thanks for all you do,
