Dear John,

Across the United States, people are coming together to protest against racist
police brutality and demand respect for Black lives. We know Black Lives Matter,
and we’ll fight to stop anti-Black racism so that all of us can live in freedom
with dignity and in safety.

The protests and activism give us real hope that we can make BIG change — even
at the federal level, which, so far has failed to pass laws to protect people
from abusive policing.

An important step to ensure Black communities can thrive — and not just survive
— is creating the ability for Black people to feel safe from police violence.
The federal government must set a new standard for policing that prioritizes
accountability and safety in the U.S., and compel all 50 states to meet these
new legal standards.

Tell your Senators to pass comprehensive legislation that includes these eight
priorities to end racist policing, police violence, and provide for real means
of accountability.

When interacting with police we all have a right to be safe, be free from
discrimination, be equally protected before the law and survive the encounter.
Let’s redefine public safety with solutions that work for all communities, no
matter the color of one’s skin, who they worship or where they live.

Key reforms in the Justice in Policing Act of 2020:

* Limiting the use of Force;
* Prohibiting neck and chokeholds;
* Ending racial and religious profiling;
* Demilitarizing the police;
* Prohibiting the use of no-knock warrants;
* Allowing police to be held accountable for recklessly violating people
rights;
* Weeding out police officers with records of abusive behavior;
* Eliminating qualified immunity that allows police to kill with impunity.

Urge your Senators to act NOW to end racist policing, police violence, and
ensure accountability.
