John–
Another quick Emily’s Notes-update from Washington’s 6th and Washington, D.C.! Here’s what I’ve been up to:
• Standing with immigrant communities: Earlier this month, I visited the Northwest Detention Center – unannounced – with my colleagues Reps. Jayapal and Dexter. What I saw there, and in the ICE raids in communities here in Washington and nationwide, is the Trump administration targeting our neighbors, coworkers, parents, and siblings with no regard for due process. I’m calling out Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and manufactured crisis what it is – a transparently authoritarian power grab – and I won’t step down.
• Upholding our promise to safeguard Tribal sovereignty amidst the ongoing climate crisis: As Washington enters another dangerous wildfire season, I helped reintroduce legislation to remove red tape for Tribal Nations to attain the necessary federal resources to manage and respond to the devastation of natural disasters. The climate crisis isn’t slowing down, so neither can we – and I’m committed to ensuring all of our communities are prepared.
• I voted NO against the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill: After marathon committee markups, House Republicans passed their disastrous spending package in the cover of night. This budget proposal slashes funding for essential programs like Medicaid and SNAP, all to pay for massive tax breaks benefitting corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Senate Democrats are now fighting to keep this reckless plan from being implemented, and rest assured that I will continue to stand up for our communities no matter the outcome.
• Committed to the transportation infrastructure we need: I joined my colleagues Reps. Begich (AK), Garamendi (CA), and Malliotakis (NY) to launch the bipartisan Congressional Ferry Caucus. Our communities rely on ferries for daily commutes, accessing medical care, and connecting with friends and family. Together, we’re advocating for long-term federal investment in public ferry systems, because these boats are more than just transportation, they’re a lifeline for so many.
• Protecting our treasured wilderness: Washington State’s forests, rivers, and wilderness are vital to our communities, crown jewels that shape so much of our lives. I joined with Sen. Patty Murray to introduce legislation that would permanently protect more than 100k acres of Olympic National Forestland and 464 river miles. Protecting our precious natural resources also means protecting local economies, livelihoods, and Tribal Sovereignty – and as Senate Republicans push ahead with their plan to sell off more than 250 million acres of public lands, this is a fight which we cannot and will not concede.
• Preparing for Pride celebrations: I’m so excited to serve as the grand marshal of the Seattle Pride Parade this Sunday! This means so much to me, particularly this year. So many politicians from state legislatures to Congress are stoking fear and hatred against the LGBTQ+ community. We have to show support for queer kids and families, elders and community service organizations in every way we can — whether that’s speaking on the House floor or expressing **joy and pride** in our streets. I was honored to sit down with Bree Coven from the Seattle Times a few weeks back to talk about what Pride means to me, take a look here. [[link removed]]
Now, I have an ask for you. June 30 is our next Federal Election Commission (FEC) deadline, after which all of our fundraising numbers will be made public.
Team Emily has big plans to organize on the ground and mobilize voters far and wide to help elect the principled leaders our communities need – from Deb Krishnadasan for State Senate here in Washington’s 26th LD, to Jo Mendoza for Congress in AZ-06.
Your donation, no matter the amount, makes a huge difference in those efforts. We know that the GOP is already on the lookout for vulnerable Democrats to defeat and close races to pour money into winning, so let’s not give them the chance. Rush in $25 or more here: [[link removed]]
