South Carolina can now block Medicaid patients from choosing trusted providers like Planned Parenthood.

NARAL Pro-Choice America recently changed its name to Reproductive Freedom for All. Our name may be new, but our mission of protecting and expanding reproductive freedom remains the same.

Hey—Sorry about the double emails today! We sent the first by mistake. More importantly, we want to tell you about breaking news out of SCOTUS that will impact Planned Parenthood and Medicaid patients in South Carolina. See more below:

John,

The Supreme Court just stripped millions of their right to choose their health care provider.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court failed patients in South Carolina and across the country. In a devastating decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the Court greenlit South Carolina's decision to block Medicaid recipients from choosing their trusted health care provider—like Planned Parenthood—simply because they also provide abortion care.

As Justice Jackson powerfully wrote in her dissent, this decision "will strip those South Carolinians—and countless other Medicaid recipients around the country—of a deeply personal freedom: the 'ability to decide who treats us at our most vulnerable.'"

Let's be clear: this is not just an attack on Planned Parenthood. This is an attack on the people who rely on Medicaid, especially those already facing barriers to care—including Black, Latina/x, Indigenous, AANHPI, LGBTQ+ communities, immigrants, people with disabilities, and those living in rural areas. This decision opens the door for other states to block people with Medicaid coverage from going to their trusted health care providers—solely because they also provide care that some may disagree with.

This decision undermines the basic promise of Medicaid: that people have the right to choose the provider they trust. The Supreme Court has given politicians the green light to play politics with our health.
