New Regional Law Enforcement Academy Opens in Arlington 

Sheriff Johnson and members of our command staff were honored to attend the grand opening of the Northwest Regional Law Enforcement Academy in Arlington. This new facility marks a major step forward in expanding access to law enforcement training in our region.

The Sheriff’s Office currently has six recruits enrolled in the inaugural class, with another group scheduled to begin the 19-week academy this August. One key benefit of this local academy is that new hires can remain close to home and family while completing their training right here in Snohomish County.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology—including virtual reality simulation, tactical training environments, and a large indoor training warehouse—the academy is designed to provide modern, hands-on instruction that reflects the evolving needs of today’s law enforcement professionals.

First Women Graduate from Jail’s In2Work Program

We’re proud to celebrate a milestone achievement—our first female graduates from the jail’s IN2WORK program! Congratulations to Joanna, Autumn, Natalie, and Bryce, who each completed the program and passed a rigorous 90-question exam to earn their ServSafe certifications through the National Restaurant Association.

Their success is a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to building a better future.

The IN2WORK program, sponsored by Aramark and led by their on-site food service team, provides incarcerated individuals with hands-on training in kitchen operations and food safety. The goal: to reduce recidivism by equipping participants with the skills they need to secure meaningful employment after release.

Snohomish County Target Zero Task Force Emphasis Results in 36 DUI Arrests 

The Snohomish County DUI & Target Zero Task Force is committed to reducing serious injury and fatal vehicle crashes across our region. Through enforcement, education, and collaboration, the goal is simple and powerful: zero traffic deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

High Visibility Enforcement is where law enforcement increases patrols in areas known for high-risk driving behaviors. These efforts are paired with public education campaigns like Teens in the Driver Seat, and initiatives focused on impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt use.

Over the Cinco de Mayo weekend (May 2–5), the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Washington State Patrol and local police departments for a targeted enforcement effort. Daytime patrols focused on speeding, while nighttime efforts prioritized identifying and arresting impaired drivers. The WSP Mobile Impaired Driving Unit (MIDU) was on site to assist with DUI processing.

The results of the weekend operation:

• 1,855 traffic stops 

• 974 speed infractions issued

• 36 DUI arrests

This successful operation highlights what we can accomplish when agencies work together to keep our roadways safe. Thank you to Target Zero and all our partners and to the drivers who choose safety first—every time they get behind the wheel.

World Affairs Council Visits Snohomish County Search and Rescue

The World Affairs Council of Seattle recently brought a group of international mountain rescuers to visit our Air Unit as part of an exchange program hosted by the U.S. State Department. During their visit, the group—made up of professionals from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru—received an in-depth overview of how our team uses air support in search and rescue missions in the Cascades.

Sheriff Johnson Swears in “Sheriff For A Day” Ashton Baxter

On May 8, Sheriff Johnson had the honor of swearing in our 2025 Sheriff for a Day—8-year-old Ashton Baxter. Ashton is a kind, brave, and loving little boy who brings light to everyone around him. He adores the color blue and finds joy in all things Disney, especially Stitch from Lilo & Stitch.   Ashton has Sanfilippo Syndrome (MPS III, Type A), a rare and terminal genetic disorder that causes severe brain damage and progressive neurological decline. Children with Sanfilippo gradually lose the ability to walk, talk, and eat.   Ashton is no longer able to speak, walks with assistance, and his loving parents meal plan each week for his special puréed diet. Each day, Ashton’s family surrounds him with love and strives to fill everyday with happiness. They are devoted to raising awareness of this devastating disease, in hopes of helping other families on the same journey.   Our community is invited to join us for two special occasions to celebrate and support Ashton: July 4 at 6 p.m. at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe for a demolition derby, fireworks and our Sheriff For A Day racing! 38 Residents Graduate from 2025 Community Academy 

This spring, 38 community members completed the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office Community Academy—a 12-week program designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the public through education, engagement, and transparency.

The Community Academy offers residents a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of our office. Through classroom presentations, hands-on demonstrations, and precinct tours, participants learn directly from our deputies, detectives, and corrections staff who serve our communities every day.

At the completion of the academy, graduates have a deeper understanding of our work, challenges, and commitment to public safety.

Congratulations to the 38 graduates of the 2025 Community Academy, and thank you for taking the time to learn, ask questions, and engage with us. Together, we’re building a safer and more connected community.

National Night Out is a nationwide event that brings neighbors together to strengthen community bonds and build partnerships with local law enforcement. Fourth of July Safety Reminders

Our administrative offices are closed On July 4. As always, for non-emergencies (noise and illegal firework discharge) call 425-407-3999. If there is an immediate threat to life or property, call 9-1-1.   It is illegal to discharge fireworks in Arlington, Bothell, Brier, Edmonds, Everett, Gold Bar, Lynnwood, Marysville, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Woodway, Darrington, and in unincorporated southwest Snohomish County.    Here are a few safety tips to prepare ahead of the holiday: Wet down your lawn ahead of time. Leave your hose out and available for quick access, even if you aren’t planning to be home. Keep fireworks away from brush, leaves and any flammable substances. Have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents. Do not point fireworks at anyone, even as a joke. Even sparklers can be dangerous (glow sticks are a great substitute for young kids) Light only one firework at a time and do not attempt to relight a “dud”
