This Week’s Topline

When Your Anti-War Movement Has an Antisemitism Problem

[Excerpt from a new op-ed by ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt in the NY Post:]

As President Donald Trump weighed and ultimately decided to strike the Iranian regime’s nuclear sites Saturday, American anti-war voices were mobilizing — and their messages revealed a disturbing truth. The one thing uniting the radical left and far right in their anti-war stance is a shared willingness to blame the Jews. …

Today, as Americans debate Trump’s military action against Iran, the same dangerous patterns are emerging. Whether dressed up as “anti-Zionism” or presented as high-minded foreign policy analysis in coded language, legitimate policy debates have become vehicles to spread antisemitism. As the Anti-Defamation League has documented, violent antisemitic incidents are now occurring at historically high levels. We see a direct correlation between anti-Israel rhetoric and global anti-Jewish incidents. Every person claiming to oppose war in the name of human dignity must reject antisemitism completely — whether intentional or not.

This isn’t about American foreign policy or even Jewish safety, though both matter enormously. What’s at stake is whether we will allow conspiracy theories, and hatreds that have poisoned societies throughout the centuries, to poison ours.

It should not be a difficult choice.

What’s News

Strides in Funding Community Safety: This week’s U.S. House Appropriations Committee vote to boost Nonprofit Security Grant Program funding is a good start, though the new total of $335 million still falls short of the need to shield at-risk nonprofit institutions such as synagogues during this time of increased antisemitic violence in the aftermath of 10/7. ADL has been a longtime champion in pushing to increase these funds and was proud to work with bipartisan members on this latest funding increase. We are calling for an increase up to $500 million in 2026 to ensure that the funding covers all of the applicants who might otherwise be turned away, and we are deeply grateful for the thousands of ADL supporters who have reached out to Congress to call for adequate security funding. Let’s keep that effective advocacy going!

  • 👉 Speak up now with ADL! Demand that Congress increase security funding. Jewish communities face a dire threat environment, and even with the modest increase that the House agreed to this week, funding levels for the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program could leave hundreds of vulnerable institutions such as synagogues without protection. We need at least $500 million in funding. Click here to join ADL in calling your U.S. Senators to advocate for this life-saving funding today. → I’ll take action now

Reaction to Iran Attack
(Screenshot: X)

Antisemitic, Anti-Israel Rhetoric Spike After Conflict with Iran: Escalating tensions in the Middle East are feeding antisemitic, conspiratorial and extreme anti-Israel reactions. In recent days, commentary has included accusations from anti-Zionists that America is doing Israel and AIPAC’s bidding, and from antisemites and white supremacists that openly blames “the Jews” for the U.S. strikes. The ADL Center on Extremism continues to monitor the reactions of individuals and groups who spout these classic anti-Jewish and anti-Israel tropes. Read ADL’s analysis.

The Academic Exclusion of Jewish Voices: ADL and the Academic Engagement Network assert that “‘Scholasticide’ Is Creating Divisions, Not Solving Them” in an essay criticizing efforts by the American Association of University Professors to forge coalitions with groups who have been fueling a climate of incitement against Jews and Israel. In the name of protecting academic freedom, the AAUP has partnered with organizations whose rhetoric and activism drives Jewish and pro-Israel faculty and students to the margins. Webinar on the strike on Iran

[EVENT HIGHLIGHTS] The Iran Conflict + Fighting Antisemitism: This week, ADL hosted an important online discussion to shed light on the dangerous moment we are in. Hear from ADL experts and other speakers including former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel B. Shapiro, who shared keen insights on events in the Middle East, the surreal new normal facing Israelis, and how ADL is taking action to monitor spiking antisemitism and to support the U.S. and global Jewish community. You can watch the full recording here. If you want to know more about the Iranian regime’s ongoing efforts to promote anti-Jewish hate around the world you can read ADL’s collection of research and reports on the subject.

MAKING PROGRESS WITH ADL

Try Harder, Instagram: The Jewish musical group Maccabeats discovered particularly hateful comments on their Instagram posts, including one that said “#killalljews.” The Maccabeats reported this to Meta (the owners of the Instagram platform) and got a response claiming that these antisemitic messages didn’t violate their Community Standards. The Maccabeats then reached out to ADL; we used our channels to formally elevate this to Meta and note that one can reasonably assume that “#killalljews” is a clear violation of their policy, which forbids calls for violence and threats. When they did not respond, we took to social media to point out their failure to address the antisemitic language. That did the trick. Within hours a Meta executive went online to say that they had taken action to enforce their policies; they removed the comment and the account holder of the comment. The Maccabeats thanked ADL publicly on Facebook for our advocacy.
