Celebrating Fathers

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord. . . . Like arrows in the hand
of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man
who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed.
Psalm 127:3-5

As we honor our fathers, let's take a look at some of our nation's Founders, most of whom were also fathers. Many of the signers
[link removed] of the Declaration had children, and Carter Braxton
[link removed] had the largest family with 18 children. Some signers
[link removed] of the Constitution also had large families, such as William Livingston
[link removed] (13) and Roger Sherman
[link removed] (15).

As good fathers, these men led in the spiritual care of their children. For example, the biographer of Roger Sherman reported
[link removed] ,

The volume which he consulted more than any other was the Bible. It was his custom, at the commencement of every session of Congress, to purchase a copy of the Scriptures, to peruse it daily, and to present it to one of his children on his return.

John Adams
[link removed] (who spent a good portion of the War for Independence away from his family) outlined
[link removed] to his precious wife, Abigail, the education their children should receive:

The education of our children is never out of my mind. Train them to virtue. Habituate them to industry, activity and spirit. Make them consider every vice as shameful and unmanly. Fire them with ambition to be useful. Make them disdain to be destitute of any useful or ornamental knowledge or accomplishment. Fix their ambition upon great and solid objects, and their contempt upon little, frivolous and useless ones.

John Quincy Adams
[link removed] grew up under this instruction and became the father of four children. In his many years of public service
[link removed] , he would often spend extended periods away from his family. During this time John Quincy Adams wrote a series of letters
[link removed] giving his son advice on how to read and study the Bible, informing
