Nearly 71 million people are forcibly displaced around the world—the most in modern history.
Forced to flee violence, conflict, and persecution in their countries of origin, many end up stranded in overcrowded camps with little access to even the most basic services—and at particularly high risk of contracting COVID-19.
The global coronavirus pandemic has compounded the already dire situations of many displaced people. Many of the measures necessary to control the spread of COVID-19 are difficult or impossible in refugee camps. How can you maintain physical distance when you share a cramped shelter with ten or more people? How can you wash your hands without reliable access to soap and water?
At Doctors Without Borders, we are committed to maintaining our medical humanitarian projects in more than 70 countries around the world despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Our top priority is providing free, high-quality medical care to the people who need it most—people like refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, and others who have been forced from home. We rely on supporters like you—everyday people who care—to help us deliver medical aid to those most in need. With an unprecedented amount of need on this World Refugee Day, we’ve set a goal to raise $240,000 by midnight tonight.
From forcibly displaced people in Greece, Syria, and Tanzania to the nearly one million Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh, our teams are doing everything they can to help.
We’re distributing hygiene kits in Brazil; setting up isolation units in Dadaab, Kenya’s largest refugee camp; and calling on the Malaysian government to repeal policies that interfere with the delivery of critical health care to refugees and asylum seekers. And with reports surfacing that the first case of COVID-19 has been detected among the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, our teams are racing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and provide care. Still, the challenges are many, unpredictable, and nearly unprecedented in scope, and our teams are being called on to do more than ever before. Meeting this $240,000 goal by midnight could not be more important.
