John --
Just today the Department of Homeland Security announced an inhumane policy that could lead to migrant families being detained for the entirety of their immigration proceedings, which for some individuals could take months -- even years.
The change reverses a rule that limited migrant detention to 20 days and will lead to more overcrowding at border camps and cause more children to be stripped from their families.
The Trump Administration has been promising to end what they inhumanly call, “catch and release,” despite pushback from the courts. It’s clear, this new policy is a scare tactic designed to suppress refugees and migrants from seeking safety and a better life in the United States.
On top of that, the DHS head announced today that the agency will not be providing detainees with influenza vaccinations this year!
Congress recently approved $4.9 billion in supplemental spending for the DHS but the bill failed to reign in the private corporations capitalizing on the concentration camps at the border. At the $750 a day that it costs to house each individual, there’s a profit incentive to hold people longer.
Courts across the country are already mounting challenges, but we cannot rely on litigation for every xenophobic policy that comes out of the White House. For far too long Congress has shirked their duties and relied on the Executive and Judicial branches to set the pace on immigration.
The 2020 election is critical. Our country is in crisis and families are suffering but we CAN take power back by seating a Brand New Congress that puts human rights first. We need your help to get our candidates elected, can you contribute today?
