Today, I gave a speech, taking my stab at an affirmative economic agenda for America. Despite the daily onslaught from the Trump Administration, I believe we need to offer a different vision, and demonstrate our positive plan for our country. As an elected leader, I feel as though I have the responsibility to treat the moment with the seriousness it deserves.

An alternative to Trump’s economic plan : [link removed]

That economic vision is centered around one reality: Our country’s shrinking middle class is the singular security threat facing the nation. Our most pressing security threat isn’t coming from overseas. And this one is existential to America.

That’s why, as a CIA Analyst and Pentagon official by training, I laid out my Economic War Plan for America. Because any successful vision for America starts with an economy that works for everyone.

This plan starts with laying out the specific problem we are trying to solve. The American middle class is shrinking. That’s not a political statement, it’s a fact. And politicians in both parties have let their priorities stray from the middle class.

And my plan aims not just to fix the broken systems or nibble at them around the margins, but to rebuild them. I am calling for action on jobs (especially focused around the rapid change AI is going to bring); education; housing; energy; healthcare; and serious political reform.

As Michigan’s Senator, who won on the same ticket as President Trump, I believe there are also some sacred cows that have to be slaughtered – old ideas where the Democratic Party needs to adapt and change. But the truth is you can’t fight something with nothing – and Democrats need to offer something positive and play some offense in order to win.
