On this date, we are all invited to reflect on the plight of millions of people who have been forced to leave their homes and their countries.

Every action counts

Dear John,

This Saturday is World Refugee Day, a crucial reminder for all of us to do our part in creating a more inclusive and caring world, where no one is left behind and everyone receives the help they need. Today, 1% of all of humanity is displaced. That is 79.5 million people fleeing conflict, violence and persecution worldwide.

Even in times of pandemic and uncertainty, refugees and other extremely vulnerable people keep the dream of a safer future alive.

Every year, 20 June celebrates the strength, courage and resilience of refugees and brings global attention to the rights and needs of refugees. On this day, we’re also inspired and moved to action by their dreams – especially in times of pandemic and uncertainty.

Thank you for being part of UNHCR’s life-changing work so far! With your support, we are helping refugees survive and thrive.

“On this World Refugee Day, I call for greater global solidarity and action to include and support refugees, internally displaced and stateless people as well as their hosts. Whoever you are. No matter where you come from. Every one of us can make a difference. Every action truly counts.”

Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees

22-year-old, award-winning, Ivorian artist O’Plérou saw his family and friends flee their homes during a political crisis a decade ago. He is using this experience to showcase diversity and create understanding through his work.
UNHCR partnered with Twitter and O’Plérou for the launch of the 2020 World Refugee Day emoji, which is live on Twitter now.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is threatening all regions globally, but especially refugees communities. This World Refugee Day, there’s plenty you can do to help protect and improve the lives of refugee children with UNCHR and our partner UNIQLO. 19-26 June, a percentage of the sales of UNIQLO Baby products will go towards helping refugee families and children.

It has never been more clear:
all of us have a role to play in order to bring about change. As the High Commissioner stated, everyone can make a difference. Choose the best way for you to show your support and join us in celebrating World Refugee Day. Thank you for standing with refugees.
