Fellow Conservative,

Billy Graham once said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.”

This statement certainly rang true on Thursday night, when rioters in Portland shamefully tore down and defaced a statue of George Washington, the Father of our Nation.

Many liberals would have Washington’s contributions to America go “unsung, unpraised, and unnoticed.” But we know that Washington’s life and memory is “one of the most valuable assets of our country.” That’s why we must stay engaged as citizen activists and preserve our nation and its history for future generations.

Tomorrow is Father’s Day, and we wish a happy Father’s Day to George Washington and all the fathers reading this.

  • Great American Outdoors Act—By a vote of 73-25, the Senate passed the Great American Outdoors Act to fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Conservatives rightly raised concerns that the bill will increase federal spending on land acquisition and potentially undermine the right of state and local governments as well as private citizens to use and manage their own land
  • JUSTICE Act—Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C) introduced the JUSTICE Act this past week. The legislation is designed to focus on police reform, accountability, and transparency in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Meanwhile, House Democrats pushed a competing police reform bill through committee this week and it is expected to receive a vote on the House floor next week.

Twice this week, the Supreme Court mistook themselves for our elected representatives and decided to write law instead of rule on cases:

Redefining “sex” in the Civil Rights Act

In a 6-3 decision on Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that the word “sex” in the 1964 Civil Rights Act refers to not only an individual’s biology as male or female but also one’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

How will the ruling affect the American people? The Heritage Foundation explains:

Today’s ruling will have severe consequences for the privacy, safety, and equality of all Americans. The Court has rewritten our civil rights laws in a way that will undermine protections and equal rights of women and girls. It will also expose employers that are struggling to recover from the coronavirus pandemic to significant liabilities.

Congress has not legislated such an outcome and it was wrong for the court to usurp lawmakers’ authority by imposing such an extreme policy on our nation.

Defending Amnesty by Upholding DACA

On Thursday, the Supreme Court held that the Trump Administration could not end the DACA program and undo the illegal action taken by the Obama administration to grant legal status (and amnesty) to over 690,000 illegal aliens.

Senator Ted Cruz explained on the Senate floor how paradoxically ridiculous the majority opinion of the Supreme Court was:

Five Justices held that it was illegal for the Trump Administration to STOP breaking the law...Because the Obama Administration violated federal immigration laws, for now, Trump has to continue violating the law and behaving illegally.

While the Supreme Court rebuffed Trump’s attempt to end the illegal DACA program, they left a narrow window open for the Trump administration to go back and try again to repeal it. Here’s what Heritage Action Executive Director Jessica Anderson had to say about it:

While a majority of the Supreme Court may have forgotten what the rule of law looks like, Americans have not. President Trump was elected on a promise to end illegal immigration, and he should continue delivering on that promise by undoing DACA.

The Supreme Court’s major rulings this week are disappointing, but the path forward is clear: Congress needs to reassert its Constitutional authority to write our laws!

But this will only happen if there is an active and engaged citizenry holding Congress’ feet to the fire. For 10 years, Heritage Action has pursued our mission to hold Congress accountable, and now, more than ever, America needs grassroots conservatives!

Heading into 2020, we saw the need for increased accountability in Congress. It was a key driver for us to launch Project 2020, find more people who believe the same things we do, and increase our reach.

In the past 3 months, we’ve already….

  • Made 1,470,441 phone calls in Wisconsin, Iowa, North Carolina, & Pennsylvania
  • Had 43,423 issue-based phone conversations with swing voters
  • Enlisted 1,881 new Sentinel activists to join us

We invite all to join with us. If you are upset about the Supreme Court’s decisions...If you want to protect our history and stop mobs from tearing down statues of George Washington...If you want to hold Congress accountable...then become a Sentinel today. If you’re already a Sentinel, recruit more people to join you.

No victory or loss is ever permanent. We, as grassroots conservatives, have secured victories before, and we will do so again. Together.

Onward,

- Jessica and the Heritage Action team
