10 years ago today, the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of
the land in the decision Obergefell v. Hodges.

This ruling from 2015, that marriage is a fundamental right for every
couple, was the culmination of decades of hard work from activists
fighting for equal rights.

Together, we were able to further enshrine marriage equality into federal
law with the passage of my bill, the Respect for Marriage Act. It passed
with bipartisan support, and it’s one of my proudest accomplishments.

But despite
all of this progress, attacks on LGBTQ+ rights are rampant across the
country.

Republican-led state legislatures across the country have only become more
emboldened under Donald Trump’s presidency. Republican lawmakers in nine
states have already proposed at least one piece of legislation that
targets marriage equality.

Despite the attacks, I promise to keep up the fight for LGBTQ+ rights
until every person can live freely, openly, and authentically. Now is the
time to build on the legacy of activists — like those who led the
Stonewall Riots in 1969 and those who used the judicial system to make
marriage equality the law of the land in 2015.
