David Pepper’s latest piece on his Substack, Pepperspectives, is a gut punch to anyone who thinks the courts and, in particular, Chief Justice John Roberts, are here to save us. When an authoritarian sweeps into power, they often focus their ire on the courts — one of the backstops to their power. Either neutralizing the courts or eliminating them ensures that the autocrat can commit crimes without any enforcement.
Trump is no different, except that our courts have neutralized themselves on his behalf. He didn’t have to do much to get what he wanted.
And what does Trump want? He wants to ship you to a foreign prison. He wants to launch wars without any oversight. He wants money.
Thanks to the courts, he will get it.
