Dear Friend,

Today, I need to share the urgent truth about the state of our party. The political landscape around us has changed — and it's left Greens in a unique and necessary role.

The NDP has been decimated, and their interim leader is still finding his footing. Meanwhile, the Liberals have taken a sharp turn to the right and are now aligned with the “opposition” Conservatives in pushing through regressive laws. I once thought this would be a strong government committed to climate policy under Prime Minister Mark Carney, but it has morphed into something far more cynical and less accountable. I never saw that coming.

Over the last month, it has become clear that the real leadership in opposing bad policy is coming from the Greens. Yes, I may be the lone Green MP, but I am not the lone Green. Wonderful former MPs, heartbreakingly no longer in Parliament, like Mike Morrice and Paul Manly, and great candidates across the country are still engaged and active. We are a force. We are standing up for the environment, for Indigenous rights, and for democracy.

Our volunteer leadership, the members of Federal Council, our Chief Agent, and the GPC Fund Board, are doing terrific work. We are cohesive and planning for the next election. It could come within a year, or we may have more time. No one knows for sure, but we have to be ready.

Facing facts: we had a terrible election. Even as my voice in the House is making more of a difference than ever, we have serious financial challenges. Many key staff have been laid off to cut costs: no press secretary, no membership and fundraising director, fewer mobilizers and our communications team is down to just two. Those staff who remain are dedicated and have taken pay cuts when they were already underpaid. And I, as ever, am a Green Party volunteer. My workload has more than doubled, but I have fewer resources and less staff.

The first essential step in rebuilding is to clear our election debt. We owe $750,000. It is due next year, but the interest on this debt is costing us $4,000 a month.

Please think about this. Can you make a pledge to invest $1000 for a debt-free Green Party? If 750 supporters sent us $1000 today we would be debt free tomorrow. Honestly, that would be a miracle.

Maybe 750 people will pledge to give $1000 over the next few months? Or maybe some will give what they can and ask friends to help? If we can do that, we will be able to make plans with confidence.

Please think about your finances and your priorities. Humanity stands at a precipice. We alone, among millions of species, threaten all the others. Canada needs us. The planet needs us.

And we need you!

With deep thanks,
Elizabeth May,
Leader of the Green Party of Canada
