BREAKING NEWS, John:
In a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court just ruled in favor of South Carolina, allowing states to cut off Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood.
This is yet another massive rollback of healthcare rights by the far-right majority on the Court, just three years after they overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion.
Millions of patients go to Planned Parenthood for critical services like contraception, pregnancy testing, cancer screenings, and more. Now, South Carolina and other Republican-controlled states have gotten a green light to shut off Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood clinics.
In their ruling, far-right Trump appointees like Justice Neil Gorsuch argued that patients don’t have the right to choose their doctor or healthcare provider (such as Planned Parenthood), a blatant attack on our rights and ability to make personal decisions about our health.
All three liberal justices dissented, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who said this ruling “will strip those South Carolinians — and countless other Medicaid recipients around the country — of a deeply personal freedom: the ability to decide who treats us at our most vulnerable. That means we do have a sense of what comes next: as with those past rulings, today’s decision is likely to result in tangible harm to real people.”
We cannot let this extremist Court continue to roll back our fundamental freedoms or let Donald Trump give more lifetime judicial appointments to far-right extremists.
