As tensions between Israel and Iran intensified over the past decade, much of the world urged Israel to show restraint in the face of an existential threat: the possibility of a nuclear-armed Iran. But Israel has always known that when the moment came to defend itself, it would be ready. And when that moment arrived, it responded with courage and clarity.
Supported by its closest ally, the United States, Israel carried out a bold and necessary operation, Rising Lio (עם כלביא) to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. The Israeli people have also shown tremendous bravery, standing strong through waves of missile attacks that claimed lives and displaced families. They understood the stakes and stood united behind the mission to secure their future.
While Israel demonstrated strength and leadership, many Jews in the diaspora continue to embrace the old idea that if they stay quiet, antisemitism will pass them by. That someone else will do the hard work. That safety can be outsourced.
Our latest article, “Israel Paves a Path, the Diaspora Should Follow,” highlights the growing divide between Israel’s proactive approach to Jewish security and the diaspora’s continued reliance on others. While Israel has chosen strength, self-reliance, and decisive action, many Jewish communities abroad continue to trust that government institutions will protect them, even as antisemitism rises around the world. This approach is no longer sustainable. Jewish communities must learn from Israel’s example, invest in their own preparedness, and take ownership of their future.
In 2003, Israeli F-15s flew over Auschwitz, declaring the IDF’s vow to be the global shield of the Jewish people. That promise has since taken shape in Israel’s operations to strike deep into enemy territory, dismantle Hezbollah’s capabilities, and disrupt Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
This message builds on themes we explored in a previous article, “Iran Regime on Borrowed Time”. Long before missiles were launched, we called out the threat of Iran’s increasingly hostile regime, violent suppression at home, and a groundswell of internal protest. We warned that ignoring Iran’s aggression would lead to greater instability. Israel has now stepped up and acted, and in doing so, may have brought the region closer to peace after years of escalating tension.
The lesson is clear. Waiting and hoping that problems will resolve themselves is not a strategy. It is a delay. Threats must be addressed directly, with courage and conviction. The Jewish diaspora must adopt this mindset and act accordingly when fighting antisemitism and protecting itself from its detractors.
Finally, we invite you to learn more about the work of the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), an organization dedicated to advancing American national security interests in the Middle East. JINSA played a key role in the recent Israel-Iran conflict by strengthening relationships between senior American and Israeli military leaders.
Wishing you a more peaceful and secure month ahead,
Gila and Adam Milstein
