John,
Earlier this week, in a shock to the political establishment, our ally Zohran Mamdani won his Democratic primary for New York City Mayor. This victory shows that we can defeat corporate and billionaire interests when they run a campaign that puts the people first.
Now, I’m proud to endorse another justice candidate, Denzel McCampbell for Detroit City Council. I’ve worked with Denzel for a decade at the local and national level to advance racial justice, ensure our communities have the resources we need, and protect people’s rights (to housing, clean water and air, voting, due process, and more).
Denzel cares about returning power to the people, and as absentee ballots get mailed out to our district THIS WEEK, he is out knocking on doors and talking to everyday residents of Detroit. I’ve gotten to join him canvassing recently (Denzel is on the left in front):
As a community leader who’s already served in public office and started social justice organizations, Denzel is ready to take on issues that our majority-Black city of Detroit has long faced—such as systemic disinvestment, unaffordable housing and unjust foreclosures, trouble accessing clean water, police brutality, and racist voter suppression.
He’s up against opponents such as a State Rep who squandered our opportunity to pass progressive legislation while our state still had a Democratic trifecta. We know that he can win if he gets in front of voters early and often, but his campaign urgently needs our grassroots support.
Can you chip in today to help my comrade Denzel McCampbell reach Detroit voters as they receive absentee ballots in the mail?

Denzel has served as my Communications and Political Director and now he advises my campaign. His support has already changed thousands of people’s lives through bold policies and strong constituent service programs.
He has also served our community through leadership in grassroots groups and as an elected Detroit Charter Revision Commissioner, where he led efforts to make our city's governing documents center the needs of residents.
As a future city councilperson, Denzel is committed to fighting for truly affordable housing, violence prevention programs to improve public safety, reliable and affordable public transit, and a transparent and accountable government that truly engages with our majority-Black city’s residents.
He’s also a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community who joined me at Motor City Pride earlier this month (in the middle of the photo):
Denzel has also been endorsed by a wide coalition of progressive groups including the Working Families Party, Metro Detroit Democratic Socialists of America, Michigan Liberation, Michigan United Action, Detroit Action, SEIU Michigan, UAW Region 1A, Metro Detroit AFL-CIO, AFSCME Council 25, and other unions.1
We all know that Denzel is the progressive powerhouse our city needs. Will you join me in supporting Denzel McCampbell by donating to his campaign today?
Thank you for continuing to fight for a government that truly serves the people, not corporate donors or billionaires.
In solidarity and gratitude,
Rashida

John,
New York City voters just voted overwhelmingly for Zohran Mamdani, who ran on a bold agenda to make NYC more affordable for families struggling right now in the city. What makes it even more special is that Zohran is an unapologetic pro-Palestine democratic socialist. He won yesterday’s Democratic primary election against a billionaire-funded defender of the genocide in Gaza and the fascist Trump administration.
This victory belongs to all of us and shows that when a candidate has the courage to take on the political establishment and fight for justice for everyday people, we can defeat the billionaire and corporate interests that too often control our politics.
We’re not stopping with Zohran’s win. This week, absentee ballots are getting sent to my district for local elections. And my long-time colleague and comrade Denzel McCampbell is busy knocking on doors and talking to constituents in his race for Detroit City Council.
Denzel is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and I was honored to march alongside him at this month’s Motor City Pride (he’s in the middle):
Like me, Denzel was born and raised in Detroit, is dedicated to public service, and believes that everyone should have safe, well-resourced, and thriving neighborhoods. As my former Communications and Political Director, his partnership in introducing bold policies and strong constituent services programs has already changed thousands of people’s lives.
For over a decade, I’ve seen Denzel fight hard for equity and human rights—including the essential right to clean air and affordable drinking water. He helped found the Detroit Chapter of BYP100, where he led the fight against police brutality and mass incarceration. And as an elected Detroit City Charter Commissioner, Denzel led an effort to revise our city’s governing documents to center the needs of residents. Denzel is a member of the DSA Metro Detroit chapter.
He’s pushing for a government that engages with and works for all people, not just the powerful and wealthy… and he needs our help.
As people are receiving their absentee ballots in the mail, will you chip in today to support Denzel McCampbell’s visionary campaign for equity and justice?
Thank you for supporting this incredible grassroots leader. It’s no surprise to me that he’s been endorsed by a wide coalition of progressive groups including unions, the Working Families Party, Michigan Liberation, and Michigan United Action.1
Denzel is committed to fighting for truly affordable housing, protections for homeowners and tenants, mental health and violence prevention programs to improve public safety, resources and opportunities for young people and seniors, reliable and affordable public transit, an accountable government, and the well-being of everyday Detroiters.
His opponents include a State Representative who single-handedly forced the Michigan legislature to end its session early—while we had a Democratic trifecta and while policies for water affordability, Black maternal health, and voting rights were awaiting a vote.
We need representatives in government who are rooted in their community and who understand how urgently people need change.
Can you donate to support community leader Denzel McCampbell for Detroit City Council today? Together we’ll keep fighting for a government that serves the people.
