We are thrilled to recognize our extraordinary pro-bono volunteers who have gone above and beyond to serve immigrant and refugee clients. The 2025 Summer Celebration awards go to:
Outstanding Pro Bono Attorney of the Year:
Jesse Mumm
Jesse is a law clerk for the Honorable Amy R. Brosnahan of Isanti County District Court. He holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Law. He transitioned to the practice of law in 2024 after two decades in commercial corporate roles, driven by a desire to use his law degree to help other people.
Jesse shared, "ILCM was a perfect place to launch the pro bono side of my practice for several reasons. They facilitate rewarding work with people facing challenging life circumstances. Working in immigration law fosters the development of unique lawyering and client relationship skills (such as learning to effectively communicate through an interpreter), and it all comes with the guidance and support of the wonderful ILCM team."
Outstanding Pro Bono Paralegal of the Year:
Stefanie Nestvold
Stefanie has been serving as a paralegal at Ballard Spahr LLP for the past two years. In her role, she has demonstrated exceptional skills and diligence, contributing to the firm’s success through her thorough understanding of legal processes and her ability to support attorneys effectively. Her work is characterized by a keen attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, making her an invaluable asset to the team.
Stefanie became a naturalized citizen herself at the age of 12 and has dedicated her time and expertise as a volunteer at ILCM for two years, where she has been instrumental in supporting individuals in obtaining U.S. citizenship and navigating complex immigration challenges. Stefanie’s commitment to serving the community is evident through her participation in various pro bono programs. In addition to her work at ILCM, she volunteers with The Advocates for Human Rights – Immigration Court Observation Project, where she actively observes immigration court proceedings, gaining insights that enhance her ability to contribute meaningfully to the field of immigration law, and the Wills for Heroes, where first responders receive wills, powers of attorney, and health care directives. In the past two years, Stefanie has provided 93 immigration pro bono service hours and 25 service hours for other pro bono programs, highlighting her dedication to using her skills for the greater good.
Stefanie’s contributions exemplify a deep commitment to both her professional role and her volunteer efforts, making a positive impact on the lives of many. Her work reflects her passion for justice and community service, and we are proud to have her as a part of our team.
Outstanding Pro Bono Firm of the Year:
Fredrikson & Byron
ILCM's Pro Bono Team knows they can always count on Fredrikson to take on new cases. When we have an influx of DACA cases needing placement to meet a deadline—we call Fredrikson, and they respond immediately to the call to help. When we were looking to expand our services at our North Dakota offices, they were able to step in and get their ND office staff on board. A special thanks to Katy, Beverly, and Ashley who work hard internally to make sure that Fredrikson attorneys are aware of pro bono opportunities with ILCM, have training, and get support. Because of their advocacy on behalf of the work that we do, we have over 30 Fredrikson volunteers on our roster! ILCM is lucky to have such partners in this work to be able to best serve our clients in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Fredrikson’s Pro Bono coordination team:
Katy Drahos serves as Director of Pro Bono & Community Service at Fredrikson & Byron, P.A., where she is responsible for the development, implementation, and overall coordination of Fredrikson’s pro bono program, which aims to serve the unmet legal needs of our community while providing challenging and rewarding pro bono opportunities for the firm's lawyers.
Beverly (Bev) Skulrutana is a Pro Bono and Community Service Program Assistant at Fredrikson and Bryon P.A. with extensive experience in case and volunteer management. Leveraging over a decade of expertise in immigration and refugee services, she supports Fredrikson’s Pro Bono Immigration Counsel, Pro Bono Director, attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants with various cases and projects.
Ashley Roth serves as Pro Bono Immigration Counsel at Fredrikson & Byron, P.A., where she mentors and supervises attorneys across all offices on a range of pro bono immigration matters. Her work includes support for individuals fleeing persecution, unaccompanied minors, crime victims, and those displaced by war, violence, or natural disasters. She also advises on family reunification, deferred action, permanent residence, and citizenship applications.
Lifetime Achievement Award:
Lenore Millibergity
Lenore Millibergity received her JD in 1986 from William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul, MN. Prior to law school she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in history and a minor in Spanish. For over four decades, Lenore Millibergity has been an unwavering advocate for immigrant rights. From her early work with migrant farmworkers in the 1980s to co-founding the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, Lenore has shaped the foundation of our organization and the lives of countless individuals. In addition to her work at ILCM, Lenore also worked with Mitchell Hamline Law School as a field supervisor and adjunct professor from 2002 to 2007. Her work has helped reunite families, secure asylum for those fleeing danger, and provide critical support to immigrant survivors of domestic violence. Along the way, she has mentored and inspired a generation of legal professionals who carry her legacy forward. With Lenore retiring in July, we are honored to have been part of her journey and remain deeply grateful for her many contributions to ILCM and the clients we serve.
