Race + Power Weekly

In recent weeks, one of the biggest concerns around the country has been rising immigration enforcement and the lack of due process and transparency surrounding it. We have seen masked ICE agents raiding communities and workplaces. We have seen people detained and arrested at their immigration hearings. We have seen elected leaders handcuffed, arrested, and charged with felonies for performing their oversight duties. This week, we take time to acknowledge these events and to reaffirm, resoundingly, that immigrants belong here.

First, we look at how elected leaders, particularly in Democratic-controlled places and sanctuary cities, are facing increased threats as immigration enforcement is ramping up. Next, Rudy Espinoza offers a first-hand account of how raids in Los Angeles are impacting local communities as neighbors go missing. Then, we revisit Elizabeth Aguilera’s story from May, which is even more timely now, about how immigrants are organizing and what allies can do to help. Finally, Maria Constanza Costa wrote in March about the stress that children of immigrants are dealing with and what nonprofits can do to show up for them.
