Thousands of cats and other animals nationwide will be left extremely vulnerable this summer as feline breeding season peaks.

They are facing hunger and homelessness, and many shelters are at capacity as they work around the clock to care for the influx of kittens seen at this time of year.

These animals are waiting, hoping that someone will give them the care they need and the loving homes they deserve. When we first met Iris, she was one of these vulnerable kittens.

We’re about to tell you her remarkable story, but first, we have to ask:

Last year, a community cat gave birth in the backyard of an ASPCA veterinary technician’s home in Los Angeles. Vanessa noticed after monitoring the mom and kittens for around four weeks that one of the kittens, later named Iris, was in poor condition.

Her eyes were swollen shut. Honestly, I didn’t think she’d survive.

Iris was suffering from a severe infection, with abscesses covering her nose and pus coming from her eyes. Vanessa took the small kitten, who only weighed three ounces, to an ASPCA facility in Los Angeles, where she was prescribed medication. Iris remained in foster homes for a couple of months while she got healthy and navigated life with permanent vision issues. When she was finally ready for adoption, she was included in a flight transport with 20+ other animals to a partner shelter in Colorado, where she found a family to call her own.

Thanks to the support of animal lovers like you, Iris is now thriving.

And as kittens face extreme danger this summer, we hope you’ll consider making a gift in honor of Iris and all the cats and kittens like her.

Your urgent gift today could mean the difference between suffering alone and the chance at a happy, healthy life as a beloved pet.
