Dear John,

I’m just writing with a quick update after last week’s Polluter Pays Pact email. The 2025 progress report – from the UK government’s advisors, the Climate Change Committee – landed yesterday, and the news is… cautiously optimistic.

The CCC concluded that “government policies to reduce emissions have improved since last year. With more action, the UK can hit its legally binding climate targets and improve energy security for households and businesses across the UK”.

This means we can hit net zero targets for 2050 and 2030 if we put in the work. As we say in our response to the news*,  the government’s plan for net zero must be designed in a way that’s fair. That means ensuring polluters – not everyone else, including the most marginalised – are the ones picking up the tab for climate action.

Raising money from polluters could significantly boost the funding of the new climate plan that the government must produce by October.

If you agree, please sign our call for a Polluter Pays Pact:

In case you missed it, here’s my previous email about the pact and why we need it:

Extreme heat warnings have been issued across much of the UK  and there’s a real risk to lives this week. As we feel these effects of the climate crisis, let’s remember that greedy corporations have profited from fuelling climate breakdown. They’re getting rich while the whole world suffers.

The world’s biggest polluters – the global oil and gas giants – have locked us into an expensive, dirty energy system that’s devastating the planet and putting us all in danger. Unbelievably, despite the harm these corporations are responsible for they’ve almost entirely evaded responsibility .

That’s why we’re calling on governments around the world to make big polluters pay for the damage they cause. If you agree they should be made to fund climate solutions and rebuilding after climate disasters, please join us and Greenpeace in signing the Polluter Pays Pact today.

Around the world, and in the UK, we’re seeing the terrifying effects of climate breakdown play out in real time. But while the super-rich continue to benefit, ordinary taxpayers are left to pay for the damages.

Fixing the climate crisis will take all of us – businesses, governments and people. So, big polluters must play a part that reflects the damage they’ve caused.

The government’s upcoming climate plan (due by October) is a crucial test: will it serve the people, or protect the profits of polluters? We’d like to see measures such as:

Taxing polluting behaviour, like using private jets.Making fossil fuel companies pay up for the damage they’ve caused.

With measures like these, the government could raise significant funds to make its climate plan  much fairer and more effective . So, please join us and Greenpeace in signing the Polluter Pays Pact. Let’s make polluters clean up their mess.

Let’s build a cleaner, fairer future, where those responsible pay a fair amount.

Thank you,

Anna,

PS. As well as teaming up with Greenpeace on the Polluter Pays Pact, we’re also part of the Make Them Pay coalition ( [link removed] ). There really is a growing wave of support behind the call  to make big polluters pay their fair share for the damage they’ve caused. We’d love you to be part of it too and the easiest way is to sign the Polluter Pays Pact today ( [link removed] ).
