HIGHLIGHT PIECE OF THE WEEK |
New York Is Facing a Slippery Slope With Assisted Suicide Bill
|
Jessica Rodgers, Coalitions Director for the Patients' Rights Action Fund, said, "Critics warn that once assisted death is legalized, eligibility often broadens beyond initial guardrails. 'In states where assisted suicide is legal, the eligibility has expanded in practice — even without voters or lawmakers changing the laws.'" |
In April, the New York State Assembly passed, by a close vote of 81-67, dangerous and discriminatory assisted suicide legislation. During the last week of session, on Monday, June 9th, the New York State Senate approved assisted suicide by a vote of 35-27. A slim majority over the necessary 32 votes for passage. The bill will now head to the desk of Governor Kathy Hochul, who needs to hear from YOU. Click the link below to tell the Governor to VETO this bill!

Assisted Suicide Is A Big Problem |
Sally Pipes, president and chief executive officer of the Pacific Research Institute, writes, "Far from providing peace to terminal patients, these laws are often used by government-run healthcare systems to nudge sick patients toward ending their lives...There’s no doubt that medical assistance in dying will be effective—if the goal is to save the government money caring for the elderly." |
| Abuse in Assisted Suicide is Inevitable |
Jonathon Van Maren, writer and communications director for the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, stated, "It is ironic that many people who oppose capital punishment, war and other state-sanctioned violence support euthanasia. Their ethic inevitably falls back on 'choice' and 'autonomy' as its ultimate visions of moral good. Never mind that these two things will inevitably be taken from us." |

Opponents of Assisted Suicide Are Pushing Back |
John Hirschauer, associate editor of City Journal, "Once the state decides that anyone, on account of illness, has the “right” to kill himself, it has decided that suffering can render life worthless. More fundamentally, it has accepted a mistaken view of autonomy, which posits that people have the right to harm themselves." |
