In May 2024, Florida Congresswoman Kat Cammack went to the emergency room facing a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy. Doctors knew what needed to be done. She needed immediate medication to save her life. But they hesitated. 

Why?

Because Florida’s extreme six-week abortion ban had gone into effect, and medical professionals were afraid. Afraid they might lose their licenses. Afraid they might go to jail.

Congresswoman Cammack, a Republican who has supported these very laws, had to look up the law on her phone and try to contact the governor just to convince doctors to treat her. It took hours for her to receive the care she desperately needed.

Let’s be clear: no woman, regardless of party, position, or circumstance, should ever have to go through that.

This isn’t fear mongering. It’s the reality millions of women in Florida now live with because of Republican attacks on reproductive healthcare.

At Ruth’s List Florida, we believe what happened to Congresswoman Cammack is unacceptable and entirely preventable. We’re building a future where no woman has to plead for life-saving care.

Floridians deserve leaders who trust women, respect doctors, and protect access to essential reproductive healthcare, including abortion.

Let this be a turning point. Not just a cautionary tale of what can go wrong, but a rallying cry for the change we know is right.
