The Newsletter for the Movement for

Economic, Climate, and Racial Justice

There is a war against Black and Brown working class migrants. Every day, armed and masked ICE agents are targeting and kidnapping thousands at the bidding of Trump’s racist deportation policy. The most vocal activists are also being targeted, from student activist Mahmoud Khalil to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka to union leader David Huerta.  While high profile cases dominate our news feeds, 50,000 of our neighbors continue to languish in ICE detention centers. While billions are being spent on ICE and endless wars, working families are barely making rent. The No Kings marches across the country exemplify a people’s commitment to build a movement and stand against Trump’s billionaire agenda. Every day New Yorkers are putting their bodies on the line in direct action against ICE, escorting migrants after court hearings to ensure they get to their families safety, or even blocking ICE vans on the road. A better world is necessary. People are ready to fight for it.

Groundbreaking Warehouse Worker

Protection Law Now in Effect

This month, we’re celebrating the Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Program (WWIRP), now in effect after years of advocacy by our New Yorkers for Fair Economy coalition. WWIRP establishes industry-wide safety standards for warehouse workers by requiring annual warehouse safety evaluations and better training and medical care. Amazon’s Prime Day begins in a few weeks, historically a time when workers experience the highest rates of injuries. With the expansion of Prime Day from two days to four this year, we need to ensure that we have laws like WWIRP in place to regulate a rapidly growing industry that often puts profit over safety. We’re also celebrating another worker safety victory — the Retail Worker Safety Act. Led by our partners at RWDSU, the law requires employers to deploy strategies to reduce workplace violence through proactive training and emergency preparedness. Thousands of New Yorkers can now rely on these two powerful laws to protect their right to a dignified and safe workplace.

Cap Pollution & Invest in our Communities

We rallied with the NY Renews coalition in support of New York’s cap-and-invest program, which will cap emissions and make big polluters pay for climate action. It’s good for your pocket too. Cap-and-invest would save households $400 to $2000 a year in energy costs. As the federal government slashes critical climate protections and spending, our state must step up to protect working class New Yorkers. Faiza Azam, our Labor and Climate Organizer, shared in her testimony in Long Island City: “Any delays to the implementation of cap-and-invest is essentially withholding the money our communities need to prevent the next Hurricane Sandy.” You can take action right now by using this one-click tool calling for corporate polluters to pay for the damage they’ve done.

All Democratic Mayoral Candidates Agreed:

We Need to #RaiseTheWage

This election season, we wanted to know where each NYC Mayoral candidate stands on the minimum wage. The Raise Up NY coalition sent a questionnaire to the candidates who passed a 2% polling threshold and received responses from Adrienne Adams, Brad Lander, Zohran Mamdani, Zellnor Myrie, and Jessica Ramos. You can read their full responses on our website and check out the graphic below:
