John,
My name is Amanda Zurawski. And I nearly died because of an abortion ban.
When my water broke at 18 weeks, there was no chance the baby I so deeply wanted would survive. But because a fetal heartbeat was still present, the abortion bans in Texas prohibited my doctors from intervening until my own life was in danger. I ended up in septic shock. I spent days in the ICU. And it was terrifying.
That trauma was preventable. But in a post-Roe America, it's become heartbreakingly common. And not everyone has survived.
Yesterday marked three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. And I've spent nearly every day since fighting to make sure no one else has to go through what I did.
I've filed a lawsuit. Traveled with Vice President Kamala Harris. Helped take a documentary about my experience across the country. Told my story on the national stage. And through it all, one thing has become painfully clear:
This crisis is political — and fixing it starts at the ballot box.
That's why I'm proud to stand with EMILYs List. They're working to elect Democratic pro-choice women across the country — women who will fight for our rights and refuse to let extremist Republicans dictate our medical care.
