Hi John,
President Trump has nominated Emil Bove for a lifetime seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Bove is an attorney with the Justice Department and previously served as Trump's personal lawyer.
All standard procedure, right? Except this nominee, according to a whistleblower complaint, allegedly suggested that Justice Department lawyers ignore court orders that got in the way of Trump's deportation plans.
Someone demonstrating such a brazen disregard for the rule of law should not be an attorney, let alone a sitting judge.
This is all part of the president's efforts to undermine the independence of the judiciary and concentrate power in the executive branch (and ultimately, himself).
The courts are an important check on the president's power, and need to be impartial about applying the law. People who are willing to flout the law on Trump's behalf should not be federal judges.
You can help stop Emil Bove's nomination. Send a message to the Senate Judiciary Committee right away.
