Today marks the 12th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Shelby County v. Holder – a ruling that gutted a critical provision of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), and unleashed a wave of restrictive voting laws that continue to disenfranchise voters today, particularly in Black and underrepresented communities.

We’ve all witnessed the consequences: long lines, closed polling stations, voter roll purges, bans on early and absentee voting. And now, House Republicans passed the SAVE Act, an extreme and unnecessary bill designed to make it even harder for eligible Americans to vote, under the false pretense of election security.

Let’s be clear: the SAVE Act isn’t about safeguarding our elections—it’s about suppressing votes. It’s the latest attack on communities of color, students, seniors, and low-income voters.

That’s why I introduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act —to restore and strengthen the protections that were stripped away by Shelby and to finally ensure that every American can cast a ballot without obstruction.
