Last night, Zohran Mamdani won the democratic primary for the New York City mayoral race, a political earthquake with reverberations that will be felt throughout the rest of this midterm and beyond.

The Zolcano has erupted.

The race was a microcosm of the internal fight within the Democratic Party over what lesson we take from our loss in 2024 and what strategy we adopt to win against Trump in 2026 and 2028.

On one side was Andrew Cuomo - the embodiment of the establishment status quo and the notion that doing more of the same will be enough. And on the other was Zohran Mamdani - the anti-establishment candidate running on a bold progressive and aggressively anti-Trump platform.

Whereas, Zohran was funded solely by grassroots donors, Cuomo received hundreds of thousands from the same billionaires who fund Trump.

Trump backers gave money to Cuomo because they knew he would pay lip service to opposing Trump but in practice would serve their interests and take no substantive action against the president.

Voters can see through this and when we run Cuomos, we lose. But if we run Zohrans - candidates who can offer a competing vision to the one offered by MAGA, we win.
