Have you heard of carbon offsets or the carbon market?

In theory, carbon offsets are “pollution allowances” that let corporations and others continue polluting while emissions are reduced elsewhere, and the voluntary carbon market (or VCM for short) links up all of these offset projects globally.

But here’s the problem: in practice, carbon offsets give Big Polluters a get-out-of-jail-free card, and many of them are not actually delivering the promised emissions reductions.

And that’s not just bad, it’s dangerous. Because carbon offsets are consistently held up as a central pillar for climate action — a golden ticket to reducing greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. But for decades, the carbon offsets and the VCM have failed to reduce global emissions — every single time. So instead of investing resources and energy into real solutions that we know will begin to justly address the climate crisis, we’re wasting time we don’t have on dangerous distractions.

Our new report, “Built to Fail?” reveals that these offset schemes continue to spur harm to people and the planet — and distract us from real climate solutions and a just transition off fossil fuels.
