[link removed] [[link removed]] John,
Suspiciously timed stock trades have eroded public confidence that members of Congress and senior administration officials are making decisions that are best for the American people and not their own private interests.
For example, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sold off between $100,000 and $550,000 in stocks just days ahead of Trump’s tariff announcement that caused the stock market to plummet.
Similarly, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sold between $75,000 and $600,000 of stock two days before Trump’s tariff announcement, and as much as $50,000 more that day.
And Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene bought up to $315,000 in stocks just one day before Trump paused his tariffs, causing the market— and her investments —to skyrocket.
John, over the past more than five years CREW has consistently endorsed bills to put an end to this kind of questionable trading, both among administration officials and members of Congress.
Here’s the latest on that work:
In May, a bipartisan group of House members announced they were working on legislation to ban lawmakers from trading individual stocks.
We wrote a letter to Congress urging them to create a comprehensive, enforceable congressional stock trading ban, and 10 other groups joined our letter calling for this reform.
We also set out some key guidelines: Not only should the bill prohibit members from owning or trading individual stocks or similar financial assets, it should also apply to members’ spouses and dependent children, make exceptions for only truly blind trusts and include a clear enforcement mechanism.
John, we believe that this bill presents a rare instance of bipartisan consensus in an otherwise deeply polarized institution. In fact, both Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have expressed support for a congressional stock ban.
The time to pass this commonsense reform to restore public trust in Congress is now.
