John,

This is how I started my latest op-ed at Rewire News Group, How Anti-Abortion Violence is Political Violence. It’s based on the idea that the two are bound together because they hinge on self-determination and freedom.

In short: one cannot exist without the other.

Unfortunately, Christian nationalists latched onto this idea decades ago, building their own powers on issues from segregation to abortion to divide the country and seize political and institutional powers in the U.S. government.

Now, we’re seeing anti-abortion strategies make their way into the political sphere: whipping followers up on lies, claiming victimhood and more. This feeds into the kind of violence anti-abortion extremists have been partaking in for some time.

This isn’t a talking point up for debate, it is a call to action to save lives against the extreme violence that has become normalized. We must preserve our democracy and that means ensuring the full range of abortion rights for all.

Sincerely,

Erin Matson
