John,
Senate Republicans are working overtime to ram through their Big Brutal Bill that they hope to pass this weekend and send to Donald Trump’s desk by the July 4th holiday. They need to hear from you now.
If passed, 16 million people would lose health coverage1 and 51,000 would die each year2 due to cuts in Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
Eight million households would lose some or all of their SNAP food assistance—including 2.5 million children—which amounts to 1 in 5 SNAP recipients.3 2.9 million Americans will lose SNAP altogether, including 900,000 seniors and 270,000 veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and former foster youth who will no longer be exempted from SNAP’s harsh time limits.4
Cuts of this magnitude will cost jobs in all states because health providers will cut back, and people will spend less on food and other items. It’s estimated that the House version of the bill will cost 1.2 million jobs in 20295, and the Senate bill will have a similar, if not even harsher, impact on people and local economies. We must stop it.
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senators. Urge them to reject this Big Brutal Bill. Here’s a script you can use.
[Don’t remember your senators’ names? The Capitol Switchboard operator at the number above will tell you and then connect you directly. Or click here and search by state.]
Calling is easy―and it’s very important. We’ve provided a suggested call script below to help with your call:
“Hello, my name is ___ and I live in ___. I am urging the Senator to vote against the budget bill. This bill would devastate communities like mine across the country by taking away access to health care through cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, and it would take away food assistance through cuts to SNAP. Tens of thousands of people would die if this bill is passed in its current form, all to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. Instead of cutting basic needs programs, Congress should focus on helping families who need support. Please urge the Senator to do the right thing and reject this horrible bill.”
Our voices must be heard. According to polling, the overwhelming majority of Americans do not want this bill. A Quinnipiac poll found that only 27% of registered voters support the bill, while 53% are opposed to it.6 This is in line with polls from the Pew Research Center and Fox News.7
How many deaths will your Senators accept to give the wealthy more tax handouts?
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and tell your Senators to reject this death bill.
