Secretary of State Godlewski Visits Madeline Island Ferry to Highlight State Trust Fund Investment Supporting Harbor and Ferry Line Upgrades

LA POINTE, Wis. — Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, Chair of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands (BCPL), visited La Pointe on Tuesday to spotlight the role of the State Trust Fund Loan Program in supporting critical maritime infrastructure. Over the past year, the BCPL has financed millions to help the Town of La Pointe purchase the Madeline Island Ferry Line and make significant upgrades to the harbor—ensuring continued access to one of Wisconsin’s most treasured travel destinations.

“This isn’t just about boats—it’s about connecting people, supporting small businesses, and making sure the local economy can thrive,” said Secretary Godlewski. “As Chair of the BCPL, I’m proud we could deliver for this North Shore community—because when places like La Pointe succeed, all of Wisconsin benefits.”

The BCPL’s State Trust Fund Loan Program provides municipalities and school districts with low-interest, fixed-rate loans to finance public-purpose projects—ranging from roads and emergency services to community centers and utility upgrades. Since 1871, the fund has invested in local infrastructure across the state, with more than $1 billion invested in Wisconsin communities in just the past decade.

For La Pointe, the Trust Fund Loan Program has been a critical tool—not only for acquiring the ferry operation, but also for financing an EMS and fire hall and local road improvements.

“This funding made it possible for our community to take ownership of the ferry and improve the harbor,” said Glenn Carlson, Board Chair for the Town of La Pointe. “Without BCPL, we simply couldn’t afford projects like this. It’s a game-changer for the island.”

The State Trust Fund Loan Program is unique to Wisconsin. When communities borrow through the program—chaired by Secretary Godlewski—the interest doesn’t go to a bank, it goes directly back to our public schools. In 2025, a record-setting $70 million was distributed to fund library books, classroom technology, and digital learning tools across the state.

“We’re going to continue to invest in every corner of Wisconsin in ways that help keep our communities strong—while making sure our kids have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom,” Godlewski added. “Wisconsin needs more of this kind of smart, sustainable development.”
