Fourteen years ago, Rabbit—a tiny Chihuahua with ears almost as big as her heart—came to PAWS Chicago from Chicago Animal Care and Control, the city shelter. As a young pup her spirit was bright and as a PAWS pet, her future was full of love. She was adopted within a week.
Then, earlier this year, we got the call: Rabbit had been found wandering the streets in a rural Mississippi town. Thankfully, her microchip connects her to us for life. We immediately dispatched two transport volunteers on a mission to Mississippi to bring her back to safety. Once a PAWS pet, always a PAWS pet.

We’ll never know what happened to her and her family—the contact information we had was no longer active. But we know she has a long and winding story to tell. She came back to us thin, with severe dental disease and heartworm. Because of friends like you, Rabbit is now back at PAWS receiving the care she needs—three months of heartworm treatments, nourishing meals, and all the love she can handle. And she’s still got those big, pointy ears that made us all fall for her the first time.
Your gift today helps ensure our PAWS pets always have a safety net. It gives senior pets a second chance. It brings them home.
