John, Today we celebrate Juneteenth, the anniversary of the day — over two years after the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation — the final slaves were freed in the United States in 1865. As we commemorate this day, we recognize that African-Americans’ fight for true equality continues across the nation. Juneteenth is an opportunity to reflect on history, realize their plight, and commit through actions to a just system and racial equality for all. As your Sheriff, it is my duty to serve and protect the people of Maricopa County. That means all people. From encouraging and celebrating diversity in the ranks of MCSO, to rebuilding trust with the community we serve, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that my promise to the people of Maricopa County is fulfilled. Be safe, be well, and Happy Juneteenth, — Sheriff Paul Penzone
