Hi Friend,
ICYMI, Trump’s dangerous budget bill includes a provision that would ban all state and local governments from passing any bills regulating AI for TEN YEARS. That means no guardrails around how we develop and deploy this emerging tech, even though we’ve already witnessed its harm.
Our senators may vote on this provision as soon as TOMORROW. Now is our last chance to contact them and urge them to stop this dangerous provision before it’s too late. Write to your senators and demand that they vote against the ban on AI laws now.
WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR SENATORS
Here’s what we know about AI so far: A recent study by MIT found that using it excessively can lower the brain’s ability to think critically, especially in young people. [1] Models have engaged in sexual or harmful conversations with people it knows are minors, exposing them to dangerous information. [2] AI models are already being trained on copyright material (and being sued for it), putting everyone’s intellectual property at risk. [3] Not only does AI hallucinate or make up answers, but AI firm Anthropic found that top AI models will blackmail those who try to turn them off. [4]
These are just some of the dangers we’re already seeing with AI development without regulation. And in ten years’ time, this could look even worse. Without regulations, we’re leaving families and communities vulnerable to the whims of profit-driven Big Tech billionaires working to accelerate AI development, regardless of its risks. This ban is a blatant gift to tech CEOs.
But our lawmakers have the power to stop this by allowing states to pass laws to protect their residents from AI harms. And it’s up to us to make sure they know that we demand our states have the ability to fight for protection NOW, not in ten years’ time. Send them a letter demanding that they stop this AI ban today.
In solidarity,
