I’m Paula Jean Swearengin. I am a coal miner’s daughter and granddaughter, and I’m now the Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senate in West Virginia this November.
I’ve been fighting for decades for clean air and water, and a diverse economy. You may be familiar with my 2018 campaign, which was featured in an award-winning documentary released last year.
Here’s a little more about me and why I’m running:
- In 2018, we gained more primary votes than any U.S. Senate challenger ever has in West Virginia. And on June 9th of this year, we prevailed in a tough three-way primary election, without taking a dime in corporate PAC donations. We’re running a truly people-powered campaign built by the support of West Virginians across the state.
- Sen. Shelley Moore Capito has put her party and big donors first and voted in line with Trump and the GOP across the board. Despite the outcry from her constituents, she voted to confirm Betsy DeVos and Brett Kavanaugh. And when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country, she voted to shift billions in bailouts to corporations, leaving breadcrumbs to hard-working Americans across the country.
- We deserve better. We deserve a Senator who will put constituents first, regardless of party. I’ve been fighting for ALL West Virginians my whole life, and I’m taking this fight to the floor of the U.S. Senate.
As Senator, I’ll put the people of West Virginia first, but I know how important a Senate majority is for the good of the entire country.

Our number one priority during this time is to do everything possible to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in West Virginia and across the country. Our campaign has created and is maintaining a COVID-19 Community Resource page, has canceled all in-person events, and is supporting local efforts to help those in need.
