1) New York Democrats Opt For Socialism… For Now
More evidence of the miserable state of affairs on the Left. As we feared, the Democrats in America’s largest city chose Zohram Mamdani, the 33 year-old socialist. He was able to avoid serious scrutiny of his crazed ideas to cripple the police, business and educational standards - in part because he had the luxury of running against the disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Good riddance to him.
Mamdani would be a loon as mayor, but there is real opposition. Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, has his own scandal skeletons, but is not a wrecking ball aimed at New York’s future. Curtis Sliwa, founder of the anti-crime Guardian Angels, is the Republican candidate.
The worry is that if Adams and Sliwa split the anti-Mamdani vote they will likely both lose. Some business leaders are urging President Trump to appoint Sliwa to a post at the U.S. Department of Justice. That would make it much easier to beat Mamdani after his radical record is finally scrutinized.
Word to the wise: Chicago Democrats went with a charismatic socialist Mayor two years ago when Brandon Johnson was elected, and that experiment has been a complete tax and spend fiasco for the Second City. What a sad state of affairs for the Big Apple.

2) SALT and the Big Spenders
The SALT Republicans and Democrats remind us of the proverbial teenager who kills his parents and throws himself at the mercy of the court because he's an orphan.
One of the common "justifications" for retaining the state and local tax deduction is that the big blue states with high tax burdens pay a disproportionate share of the federal taxes to pay for federal programs that disproportionately benefit smaller and mostly red states.
That's true as far as it goes. But we examined who in Congress has tended to be most inclined to vote for these "progressive" policies that send so many federal tax dollars to poorer states like Mississippi and Louisiana. It's not the members from these two states.
Here are the average scores for the Senate and House delegations in these states compared to the average for all Senators and Representatives.

The biggest spenders in Congress and the biggest taxers are clustered in the Northeast, Illinois and California.
If Blue Staters think it’s unfair that they pay so much of the taxes, then stop voting for all the new taxes and spending.

3) Trump Takes A Stand For Rail Deregulation
Here’s yet another Trump administration deregulation initiative that would overturn an expensive Biden era rule.
The Trump DOT is going to court to end the rule that forces rail companies to have a minimum of two crew members on most freight trains. Biden said this was necessary for safety, however, as we’ve written before, such a mandate is simply a giveaway to unions, would likely not make hauling safer, and would almost certainly make hauling our goods more expensive.
Fortunately, the Trump Administration is close to ending this dangerous policy.
Our UP cofounder, Steve Forbes, does a good job of eviscerating this sop to the rail unions:
Let’s be clear: The Biden crew size rule has nothing to do with safety…Decades of evidence, including a decline in rail accidents since deregulation in 1980, show that technology and investment—not crew mandates—have driven safety gains…
By rejecting this mandate at the agency level, the Trump Administration can deliver a win for rank-and-file rail workers and the broader American economy, while standing up to Big Labor bosses who push political agendas at the expense of jobs, innovation and real safety progress.
Now, let’s finish the job!
Rail safety has hit an all-time high without these new rules:

4) FED Chair Powell in the Hot Seat Today
Here’s the question that we want someone to ask the Fed chief today:
Mr. Chairman: Why is it that you cut interest rates twice BEFORE the election last year, but now you are rejecting rate cuts even though inflation is LOWER now than it was last September?
Could it be that you wanted to give Kamala Harris a little monetary boost right before the election? Inquiring minds want to know!

Here’s a good study that analyzes the politics of the Fed. They find (among other things) nearly 90% of staff economists at The Fed are affiliated with the Democratic Party:
