I met Dr. E. Fuller Torrey in the 1980s, on the grounds of St. Elizabeth’s psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C. Even then, Dr. Torrey was a force — unafraid to challenge powerful institutions, unshaken by criticism, and utterly devoted to one thing: helping people with the most severe forms of mental illness.
For decades, Dr. Torrey has spoken up when no one else would, and stood firm when others walked away. Dr. Torrey’s research rewrote what we thought we knew about mental illness; his courage in advocacy has changed laws and saved lives.
Treatment Advocacy Center exists because of that courage. And today, the annual Torrey Action Fund carries Dr. Torrey’s mission forward — fighting for the right to treatment, for the dignity of people with SMI, and for a system that doesn’t look away.
Your support helps fulfill Dr. Torrey’s vision and drives the mission of TAC. Most importantly, it gives people with severe mental illness the chance they deserve.
With gratitude,
