On June 19th, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to deliver the words of the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved people in Texas – declaring the last group of slaves in the United States to be free.
But even in 2020, the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and true equality has not yet been realized. Black Americans face systemic disadvantages stemming from the racist foundations of this country that we still must mobilize to root out.
We’ve come a long way from 1865. But these times are strong evidence that we must redouble our efforts to correct the systemic injustices that still plague the lives of Black Americans. Thank you for taking action.
